Books I read in October

October was almost as productive as September. I read nine books!
There are two lists below. The first list contains the books I really liked and recommend to read. The second one contains the rest of the books.

The books I really liked

1. Melmoth by Sarah Perry

Melmoth is a huge discovery for me. It’s a gothic story with an element of fantasy that serves to illustrate the nature of human beings. I’m totally in love with Melmoth; with its style and its story. Read my review of Melmoth for more information.

2. The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar

Screen Shot 2018-10-28 at 15.07.55

An absolutely gorgeous book with an intricate story about people’s lives in the 18th century London. I haven’t read anything so beautiful in years and there probably will be years till I read something that beautiful again. If you want more information, you can find it in my review of The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock.

3. You Were Made For This by Michelle Sacks

Screen Shot 2018-10-04 at 12.49.59

You Were Made For This is an intense psychological thriller about people who are not what you initially think they are. I loved how perfectly the characters were being unveiled. I loved the controversial ending that I felt was natural for these characters. You can read more in my review of You Were Made For This.

4. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

If you want to get lost in a book, get a copy of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Despite the several flaws that I noticed in the book, I generally liked it very much. It was so much fun to be reading a book without getting bored for a single minute. Here’s my review of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

5. The Last by Hanna Jameson

Screen Shot 2018-11-01 at 17.08.08

The Last is an apocalyptic story about a small group of people who are trying to survive in the wake of a nuclear war. The Last hasn’t been published yet, but if you are building your reading list, I would definitely recommend adding The Last to that list. My review of the book will appear on the blog later.

Other books I read in October

1. The Salt of the Earth by Jozef Wittlin

Screen Shot 2018-10-11 at 17.37.33

The Salt of the Earth could be a very interesting historical novel about ordinary people during the WWI. Unfortunately, because of its writing style, it’s very hard to read. It’s also a first book in a trilogy that never got finished so it also leaves its mark on the whole perception of the book. It was published before, and will be republished in February 2019. My review of The Salt of the Earth will also appear later.

2. The Darkness by Ragnar Jónasson

Screen Shot 2018-10-24 at 19.08.21

The Darkness is a thriller that causes very contradicting feelings. I liked most of the book and hated the ending. Some people actually liked the ending too. You can read my review of The Darkness.

3. The Chalk Man by C. J. Tudor

Screen Shot 2018-10-25 at 16.18.25

The Chalk Man is a thriller that many raved about. People couldn’t sleep at night, they were scared and found the book very spooky. I didn’t. It is gory, but it is not scary. You can read more about it in my review of The Chalk Man.

4. The Songbird by Richard Parker

Screen Shot 2018-11-01 at 17.10.48

The Songbird is actually not a bad thriller. I didn’t find the ending satisfying but the writing and the plot were quite good. The Songbird hasn’t been published yet, and my review of it will appear later.

I feel so lucky to have read so many books that I can actually recommend! Off to November now! My reading list is getting more and more exciting with each day!

      1. You were made for This looks great and I am on the Blog Tour for The LAST so I won’t read that one until closer to that. The Chalk Man has been on my pile for ages as there was a lot of publicity around it and Songbird is on my TBR pile too.

        1. You are right, our reading lists seem to match a lot! I’m excited for you, especially that you will read You Were Made For This. I liked it very much!

          1. That’s why I actually thought I’d slow down on NetGalley a bit (I’ll see how that plan goes, lol). Right now it seems to be a safer choice to read what’s been read before me, otherwise the chances to be disappointed are much higher. When is your blog tour event of The Last? I’d love to read what you thought of it.

  1. I like the sound of The Last and I’m intrigued by The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. You had a really good reading month, overall:).

      1. I haven’t read it, Alexandra… I’ll have to take a closer look – although right now I’m fairly well stacked up with science fiction reads for November:))

          1. It’s awesome! I love planning in advance but then I notice I tend to slide off the plan and often read something else instead. Thus, I have double fun – imagining future reads and reading whatever I feel like 🙂 Do you have a lot of review copies to read now?

          2. I have about 9 in hand, which will go a fair way, given I also take part in Teaser Tuesday, Friday Face-off and Sunday Post.

How far ahead do you plan, Alexandra? And how many posts do you have in hand?

          3. Do you mean posts or books? Because I hardly ever have scheduled posts. I’m still in the early stages of blogging so I don’t have many review copies (and as of recently I stopped requesting them because I noticed that most books I like tend to be those that are already published), so I just read whatever I want to and post about it. As for books, I probably have about 10 that I’m planning to read soon. I don’t know any of those fun-sounding post …erm… traditions? I’ll google them 🙂

          4. Ah… and I misread your question. I’ve got a couple of review copies to read before the end of the year – but I’ve written posts about books I enjoy and only a couple of those are review copies. Because I do this mostly as an enjoyable hobby, I don’t let my review copies stack up or request too many of them. So most of my posts are books I like reading too. And I was talking about posts… Those regular memes are fun and they help to take the pressure off constantly having to blog about books, so do Google them as they are also a way of joining in with other bloggers and they generally drive more traffic to my blog, too…

    1. Oh yes, The Darkness is the first in the series. Which ones are you planning to read? When’s your day on the blog tour for The Last? I’d love to read what you thought of it!

      1. I have The Seven Husbands… (Have heard so many good things about this but every time i go to read it I’m stopped by needing to read something i need to review by a certain time. So I must really try to get round to this one)
I have The Chalk Man and also The Last to read. Ive read a sample of The Last and loved it. Ive had e mails about joining the blog tour between end Jan and early Feb but nothing confirmed as yet. I really hope Ive got on it!!

Ive read The darkness, The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock and You Were Made for This and enjoyed them all!
I’m intrigued at how The Darkness is the first in a series what with how it ended!!??

        1. I think you will like The Seven Husbands 🙂 As for The Darkness (I’ll try not to give out any spoilers for those who haven’t read yet) but looks like the books of the series will be published not in a standard linear sequence. Thus, the first book is not necessarily the earliest event that happened 😉
